Grodzki Grodzki2

The use of puppetry art in adult education was piloted by Teatr Grodzki with two groups of blind and visually impaired people, both women and men. Some of them cannot see at all, but the majority has bigger or smaller visual dysfunction. 20 persons, in total participated in the classes in Zdunska Wola (central Poland) and in Bielsko-Biala (southern Poland) from November 2021 to April 2022. Since both, making and animating puppets seem to necessarily require visual sense, the goal of this experiment was to find out to what extent (if at all) such working method can be proposed to this target group. Each of the two groups were approached with slightly different way, however in both cases the participants were able to create their own paper puppets and some of them got involved also in the creation of the puppet shows, with support of people who can see.

A seemingly not appropriate action for people with visual disability turned out to be an effective tool in fostering their creativity and developing new skills and competencies. In particular, it was very useful for training manual skills,  developing imagination, facilitating spontaneous actions and strengthening confidence in own ability. Moreover, this good practice contributed to building bridges between those who are usually excluded from the mainstream of social life and the rest of society. In the puppetry workshop environment, cooperation and communication skills are being practiced in a natural way and working together connects people.
